Consumer Protection

Funeral Rules & Your Rights

The Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule applies to every funeral home in the United States. It exists to protect families from being overcharged, pressured, or forced into packages they don't want during one of the hardest moments of their lives.

Itemized Pricing

Funeral homes must give you a written General Price List (GPL) that itemizes every product and service. You're allowed to pick and choose — you cannot be required to buy a package.

Pricing Over the Phone

Funeral providers must give you accurate price information over the phone, including casket and outer-burial-container prices, without requiring you to come in person first.

No Required Caskets for Cremation

For direct cremation, you cannot be required to buy a casket. Funeral homes must offer an alternative container at a lower cost.

Outside Caskets & Urns Allowed

You can buy a casket or urn from a third party — online or from another retailer — and the funeral home must accept it without charging a handling fee.

Embalming Is Not Always Required

Embalming is rarely required by law. Funeral homes must disclose this in writing and cannot charge for embalming without your prior approval.

Written, Itemized Statement

Before you pay, you're entitled to a written statement listing every item you selected, the price of each, and the total. This is your protection against surprise charges.

Why This Matters for Your Family

The average funeral in the United States now costs between $8,000 and $14,000, depending on services and location. Even with the protections above, families are still left to pay the bill — often within days of the loss.

A properly structured final expense whole life policy guarantees a tax-free death benefit your family can use immediately to cover funeral costs, medical bills, and any remaining debts — no matter what the funeral home charges.
